Characteristics<\/font><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1.28571rem;text-align: start\"><\/span><\/h2><\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f0bb40e e-con-full e-grid e-con e-child\" data-id=\"f0bb40e\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a399397 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a399397\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul>\n<li>The Dozier snow site is located midway up Mammoth Mountain\u2014a silica dome cluster with a base elevation of 2424 m (7593 ft) and a summit of 3369 m (11053 m) that is home to one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mammothmountain.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">busiest ski resorts<\/a> in North America<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>The site is a short walk from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mammothmountain.com\/on-the-mountain\/winter-trail-map\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">McCoy Station and the Panorama Gondola<\/a>, which provides easy and reliable access to the site year-round\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Manual snowfall and meteorological measurements\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">near the Dozier site\u00a0<\/span>began in 1968 as part of the\u00a0<\/span>USDA Forest Service Snow Ranger Program\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Scientific snow observations began in the 1970s at a <a href=\"http:\/\/snow.ucsb.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/oldMMSA_santashack.jpg\">small instrumented platform<\/a> located\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">approximately 200 m away from the current platform<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>At the request of Mammoth Mountain Ski Area, the site was moved to the its <a href=\"https:\/\/snow.ucsb.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Scan12_pre2001_small.jpg\">current location<\/a> in 1987\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b739918 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"b739918\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<figure class=\"wp-caption\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"454\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/snow.ucsb.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/feart-03-00058-g001.jpg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-image-1945\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/snow.ucsb.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/feart-03-00058-g001.jpg 454w, https:\/\/snow.ucsb.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/feart-03-00058-g001-284x300.jpg 284w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 454px) 100vw, 454px\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<figcaption class=\"widget-image-caption wp-caption-text\">Figure 1 from Bair et al.
